  • It is used to describe habits
    which stopped in the past.
I played the piano when I was a child.
She always visited her grandmother.
We went to the beach every day.
They never went to school.
Formation RulesExamples
in affirmatives
  • We use past forms of the verbs.
    All subjects have the same form.
  • There are two types of past forms.
    - Regular Verbs
    - Irregular Verbs
Regular Verbs
-  I answered the question.
-  She loved the music.
-  You enjoyed the film.

Irregular Verbs
-  I drank all the milk.
-  She got up early.
-  They swam in the pool.
in negatives
  • They are formed with did not + Verb1.

    -  did not  =  didn't


Regular Verbs
-  I did not answer the question.
-  She didn't love the music.
-  You didn't enjoy the film.

Irregular Verbs
-  I didn't drink all the milk.

-  She didn't get up early.
-  They didn't swim in the pool.
in questions
  • They are formed with did or didn't + Verb1
Did you answer all the questions?
-  Yes, I did.
Did she study Maths yesterday?
-  No, she didn't.
Didn't you drink all the milk?
-  Yes, I did.
What did she cook last night?
-  She cooked chicken.
